Eventually it will Hit that I am Running a Marathon this Month

Maybe it's because I only had one 20-mile run this cycle, maybe it's because I've never run a spring marathon, maybe it's because I have always run the half at Carmel, maybe it is all the other things going on...I really haven't processed that I am running a marathon in a few weeks. I guess I am in taper, but I am not feeling the taper crazies (yet). I am sometimes yanked to reality when someone else running the full at Carmel does the count down.

Monday - 4,000 yard swim. Drills, multiple times through a long set, drills is the new pattern. I had my bike fit in the late afternoon to get ready for spring, and then I swam late at Fishers Y before coming home.

Tuesday - Steady State Run (SSR) on hills. There had been weird snow squalls and wind gusts all afternoon. Most of the run was fine, though there were some windy moments. I had done a 2.6 mile warmup and then did my 3 miles of SSR on Penn before cooling down for a mile. While I was cooling down it started snowing again. When I was done with a mile I decided to stop the watch and walk in the snow. Might be the last time this season. The Garmin 920XT altimeter is messed up so I needed to start working with Garmin on getting a replacement. 6.6 miles, 1:16:26, HR 149.

Wednesday - After work I walked over to the Y on Mass Ave and did a mobility/flexibility workout and then went for a 5 mile run with the Indy Runners downtown crew. There were so many super cute puppies out on the canal. 5 miles, 1:01:28, HR 143.

Thursday - I got up early to go to the pool and swim before work. I was on autopilot so I headed to Jordan instead of going downtown. I hit all the potholes at 81st and Westfield and lost two tires in the process. I pulled into the Y and did my swim, David took care of ordering the tires and he drove me downtown and picked me up after my last meeting. I rode at home, but the trainer and pedals had an issue at the end of the warmup and I had to change things up a bit. I was over the day. I am not sure the speed/distance mean anything because of the tech problems.

Friday - David dropped me off at the Y in the morning. I got my swim done and then worked at the Y until I was hungry, walked to lunch, walked to the library, and then walked to Firestone to pick up my tires and have David put them back on the car. 3,700 yard swim. I had a phone call with Lindsay to talk about marathon nutrition with all the food sensitivities. I needed to do a sweat rate test during Saturday's run for her to finish that up.

Saturday - I drove out to Eagle Creek to run with PBT since it had been a while. It was 35 and breezy and very damp, so it felt kinda cold. I did a two mile warmup then went into the 8 miles at Marathon Goal Pace (MGP) or faster. Since my MGP is pretty slow (12:36), I did 75-80% heart rate reserve, which was in the  mid 11:00s). I finished up with two miles cool down for a total of 12 miles. Total time 2:23:33. HR 151.

Sunday - In the morning I met with Sean at the Monon Center to have him watch technique and help with changes to my form. After church I went to the Y to lift weights while my car had an alignment. Once David left for bowling I got on the trainer for my ride. Since I had to basically redo my computer entirely to make the Windows update work I had to reconnect everything. I finally got it to work and settled into the workout and watching With Honors. The ride was 5 miles warmup, 5 miles hard, 5 miles easy, 5 miles harder, 5 miles cool down. Total 25 miles, 1:38:10.

Only 23.6 run miles this week, but I'm in taper...right?!?!?

Iron Rose 2020

Some race reports are easier to write than others. Some take a while to process everything that happened. On September 26 th  I set out to do my own full Ironman distance triathlon (2.4 miles swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run). When coach at I first started talking about it we talked about maybe as a one day effort (race format) or three days (like some of the virtual options have been). My last big training weekend (biking 100 on Saturday, running 20 on Sunday, and swimming 2.2 miles open water on Monday) confirmed that I needed to shoot for single day because I had come so close to the three day in training. So we were full steam ahead with the plan already in motion. I had planned routes, marked my bike course, secured volunteers for aid stations (amazing people all around), dropped off aid bags…finished training and tapered.   Race morning Trena arrived at my house early and we headed over to Andy’s for the swim. Trena and Jen were doing safety kayaking for me. Andy and Anna wer

Vision 2020

I'm a planner. And a dork. And I wrote a lot of Vision 2020 plans around 2000 so now that it is 2020 everything feels weird. Ok, that's out of my system. Let's talk about 2020. I've already done a self-assessment of last year and met with coach to plan 2020. Everything is focused on Ironman Wisconsin on September 13.The milestones have been set, but there will be some infill along the way. Milestone 1: Carmel Marathon - I did a spring marathon (also Carmel) in 2018 ahead of Louisville and it seemed like a good idea to do that again. So for the 10th Carmel Marathon I am running the full. Spring marathons feel undertrained compared to fall because the time between recovering from fall and getting ramped up to multiple 20 mile training runs is not there. I take the spring effort as a see what happens sort of race. Must finish to keep the streak alive, but I will see how everything else unfolds. Milestone 2: TourdeLou - not so much of a race as a supported event ride

Block 3: Race Withdraw is Real

Early in this block I was pretty pissed that some people who don't train (much) were going out and racing better than what be PR for me.  I have NO problem with people being faster than me (most are), as long as they put in the work.  But without work it just makes me upset.  And especially if they then bemoan how "slow" it was.  I wanted to race out of spite.  But I didn't get to. I've had some strong swims, and one complete disaster.  But I mostly shook off the disaster and moved on. This block was all bike trainer for cycling.  I did one of the workouts at the Loft while the class was doing something else.  I will do this for some of the weekday rides just so that there are other people around.  One of the things Coach Matt is doing is noting when I last did a workout so I can see how change is happening.  It seems I am doing better each time I do a workout, so that's good.  It will be nice to get outside (which should be tomorrow). Running has been s
