My Side Hustle is Tri Training

So many of my friends have side hustles, selling things through multi-level marketing or something else in addition to their professional job. I can't have a side hustle for a variety of reasons, but really I do...it's just one I pay to do (rather than getting paid). Tri training is basically my side hustle. That was my semi-deep training thought for the week.

Here's this week's training log:

Monday - 5,000 yard swim. It turns out that Garmin hates measuring "polo swim" as much as I hate doing it, but I did every stinking yard of it. I was sporting bandages for swims all week to keep my open wounds covered from Sunday's fall. The black eye I can't really hide though.

Tuesday - Run with PBT. 6 miles with three as a steady state run at 85% of heart rate reserve. It ended up being a bit of a progression run and I was happy with my paces for it. I was in a pretty foul mood though so I didn't really get to enjoy it...and I didn't actually talk to anyone before or after the run. It was probably my least social Tuesday run. I also wasn't convinced my heart rate monitor was working so I ordered the new tri one (yeah, I needed an excuse). 6 miles. 1:11:15.

Wednesday - I swam downtown before work. It was a 3,000 yard swim and it was fine but not great. I am feeling pretty meh about most of my swims these days and need to get out of that funk. After work I ran with the Indy Runners downtown crew. I was having a nice angry/paranoid run and then people from the group had waited for me and asked if I was last (two things I super hate). I slowed down significantly for my last mile to try to lose them (they were also showing their normative privilege and I wasn't thrilled). 5 miles. 59:21.

Thursday - I decided to ride in the afternoon hoping that my new HRM would arrive in time (it didn't), but went to the Y to work with Mark. I ended up feeling my left glute and have named the pain in my a$$ Mark. I also had a headache all day as a rainy front moved through and the sinus pressure behind my black eye really hurt. I did ride in the afternoon. Virtual ride on a flat path in Windsor, Ontario. 15.5 miles, one hour.

Friday - I decided to shower and not smell like a pool for Andy's last day at work and the celebrations we were having. Which meant I was going to swim in the evening and would need to make sure I was in a lane where the swim team wouldn't irritate me. I had a pretty short swim and there were no drills, just swimming. Cap came off on one set. Bandage kept rolling down and needed to come off on another. It was my first swim where I had heart rate for the swim to review afterward. 2,500 yards.

Saturday - 30 miles of the Ironman Louisville course (virtually) on the trainer and then a 10 mile run. I forgot to connect the new HRM to the virtual software, so no HR for the ride. It was a good confidence building ride even if it was difficult. It was a beautiful day to run outside, even though I needed a second shirt and gloves because I was starting sweaty. 40 degrees and sunny is nice though. The first half of the run felt good, then my hamstrings started feeling tight. I also kind of needed allergy medicine. 30 miles in 2:12:20 and 10 miles in 2:08:15. I'll take it for February.

Sunday - rest day!!!

Iron Rose 2020

Some race reports are easier to write than others. Some take a while to process everything that happened. On September 26 th  I set out to do my own full Ironman distance triathlon (2.4 miles swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run). When coach at I first started talking about it we talked about maybe as a one day effort (race format) or three days (like some of the virtual options have been). My last big training weekend (biking 100 on Saturday, running 20 on Sunday, and swimming 2.2 miles open water on Monday) confirmed that I needed to shoot for single day because I had come so close to the three day in training. So we were full steam ahead with the plan already in motion. I had planned routes, marked my bike course, secured volunteers for aid stations (amazing people all around), dropped off aid bags…finished training and tapered.   Race morning Trena arrived at my house early and we headed over to Andy’s for the swim. Trena and Jen were doing safety kayaking for me. Andy and Anna wer

Vision 2020

I'm a planner. And a dork. And I wrote a lot of Vision 2020 plans around 2000 so now that it is 2020 everything feels weird. Ok, that's out of my system. Let's talk about 2020. I've already done a self-assessment of last year and met with coach to plan 2020. Everything is focused on Ironman Wisconsin on September 13.The milestones have been set, but there will be some infill along the way. Milestone 1: Carmel Marathon - I did a spring marathon (also Carmel) in 2018 ahead of Louisville and it seemed like a good idea to do that again. So for the 10th Carmel Marathon I am running the full. Spring marathons feel undertrained compared to fall because the time between recovering from fall and getting ramped up to multiple 20 mile training runs is not there. I take the spring effort as a see what happens sort of race. Must finish to keep the streak alive, but I will see how everything else unfolds. Milestone 2: TourdeLou - not so much of a race as a supported event ride

Block 3: Race Withdraw is Real

Early in this block I was pretty pissed that some people who don't train (much) were going out and racing better than what be PR for me.  I have NO problem with people being faster than me (most are), as long as they put in the work.  But without work it just makes me upset.  And especially if they then bemoan how "slow" it was.  I wanted to race out of spite.  But I didn't get to. I've had some strong swims, and one complete disaster.  But I mostly shook off the disaster and moved on. This block was all bike trainer for cycling.  I did one of the workouts at the Loft while the class was doing something else.  I will do this for some of the weekday rides just so that there are other people around.  One of the things Coach Matt is doing is noting when I last did a workout so I can see how change is happening.  It seems I am doing better each time I do a workout, so that's good.  It will be nice to get outside (which should be tomorrow). Running has been s
