Uh..Houston...we (might) have a problem

The week before the week before race week is one where you want clockwork workouts with no excitement or drama. That's not exactly how this week went...

Monday - first open water swim (OWS) of the season. It was only 1,640 yards but I got to wear the new wetsuit and be in the lake. NO PANIC at all...got in and started swimming. I was the first one in and the last one out, but with no other swim buddies for safety I got in all I could. (I earned a wetsuit hickey too...need to lube the neck in this one)

Tuesday - solid steady state run on the Monon. You probably couldn't find prettier HR and pace data for a SSR if you tried (faster yes, more consistent unlikely). It was a good night. 7 miles total, 3 SSR.

Wednesday - my Wednesdays have been weird and this was no exception. I didn't manage to get a swim in, I am maybe trying to get it in Sunday afternoon. I took my bike with me to Rushville for my night meeting and rode there after the meeting while I still had daylight. 17 miles.

It was either Tuesday or Wednesday that my left hamstring and glute were so tight I couldn't sleep and it hurt to sit.

Thursday - rode my bike interval workout at Eagle Creek in the morning before going into work. Got it done and felt good while riding. 20 miles. After work I went and lifted at the Y for a little bit before heading to Monument Circle to support Partners in Housing by volunteering on the course for Run 317. I think I had more fun cheering and managing traffic than I would have running.

Friday - swam in the morning and worked from home. 2,950 yards with lots of 75s and some 400s.

Saturday - rode with the SFR crew from Eagle Creek at 8 AM. I made it up Fishback hill! (TWICE!!). The first loop was with the crew, second solo. 41 miles total. Then to the chiro for an adjustment...and a massage in the evening to try to continue working on the tightness. It seems to be getting better.

Sunday - ran at 8 AM around Williams Creek neighborhood, checking out parts I haven't run before. Rolling hills and big trees. 6 miles at long run pace. Later I'll try to do make up swim. Yoga tonight too.

Hoping I feel great to race on Saturday!

Vision 2020

I'm a planner. And a dork. And I wrote a lot of Vision 2020 plans around 2000 so now that it is 2020 everything feels weird. Ok, that's out of my system. Let's talk about 2020. I've already done a self-assessment of last year and met with coach to plan 2020. Everything is focused on Ironman Wisconsin on September 13.The milestones have been set, but there will be some infill along the way. Milestone 1: Carmel Marathon - I did a spring marathon (also Carmel) in 2018 ahead of Louisville and it seemed like a good idea to do that again. So for the 10th Carmel Marathon I am running the full. Spring marathons feel undertrained compared to fall because the time between recovering from fall and getting ramped up to multiple 20 mile training runs is not there. I take the spring effort as a see what happens sort of race. Must finish to keep the streak alive, but I will see how everything else unfolds. Milestone 2: TourdeLou - not so much of a race as a supported event ride ...

72cent

I don't remember when exactly ME first floated the idea of a 3/4 Ironman distance training race, but I do know it was on tap by the end of last year's review/2017 planning.  We picked a date between Grand Rapids 70.3 and Steelhead 70.3, which happened to be last Saturday - which is consistent with me doing an event intended to try to kill me right before my birthday (RAIN, Muncie 70.3, and Muskoka 70.3 are recent examples). I got my personal support team of Tom and Trena on board early.  I would need them to help me plan and get through the day and they were enthusiastically on board.  David was slated to ride the first lap of the ride and run point for the day...which eventually got reshuffled a tiny bit with the realization that NITE Ride in Indy was that night and he loves riding it.  Plan A was for Ft. Ben to be the venue, but in reality it is hillier than necessary out there so we moved it to Carmel (Monon Center). I had visited Lindsay to work through exten...

My First Duathlon

There are relatively few road running distances I haven't raced and the same is true with triathlon. But there's a whole multisport world I never really planned to explore. I always teased David that duathlon was for people who can't swim. And it still may be, but the why we can't swim has changed. Pools are closed and it is still a bit early for open water (never mind you shouldn't really swim open water alone). And so I did my first duathlon. It wasn't what I would call an exceptionally well planned event. It was more like semi-spontaneous shenanigans. Semi being like 10 days lead time. It started with a social pose from Ironman Virtual Reality with the upcoming schedule for their VR events. April 24-26 was listed as half Iron distance duathlon. I looked at my Training Peaks plan and my weekend was going to be "close enough" to that that I asked coach. He said sure and rearranged my weekend. I took Friday off work to plan everything for my Saturday...
