Vision 2020

I'm a planner. And a dork. And I wrote a lot of Vision 2020 plans around 2000 so now that it is 2020 everything feels weird. Ok, that's out of my system.

Let's talk about 2020. I've already done a self-assessment of last year and met with coach to plan 2020. Everything is focused on Ironman Wisconsin on September 13.The milestones have been set, but there will be some infill along the way.

Milestone 1: Carmel Marathon - I did a spring marathon (also Carmel) in 2018 ahead of Louisville and it seemed like a good idea to do that again. So for the 10th Carmel Marathon I am running the full. Spring marathons feel undertrained compared to fall because the time between recovering from fall and getting ramped up to multiple 20 mile training runs is not there. I take the spring effort as a see what happens sort of race. Must finish to keep the streak alive, but I will see how everything else unfolds.

Milestone 2: TourdeLou - not so much of a race as a supported event ride with the hubs. But a challenging route and early enough in the season to strongly encourage outdoor riding before the weather may be 100% cooperative.

Milestone 3: IM Wisconsin 70.3 - an opportunity to scope out Madison and race a half Ironman on 6/14. It's not the same bike or run course but it will still give me a sense of what I am in for and an opportunity to figure out the area a bit since I haven't been there before.

Milestone 4: IM 70.3 Ohio - a July 26 race to give me an opportunity for a supported training half that shouldn't crush my soul since the bike is flat. Apparently the run is not, so that will give me a good opportunity to practice a hilly run off the bike in race conditions. Also this will be my first race with two separate transition locations.

And then we race - September 13th I go for another Ironman finish. Mike Reilly is announcing this one and it will be so cool to finish. Since Louisville had a shortened swim there is no pressure to try to PR this, just finish in the time limit.

Of course there's a parade lap - Monumental half marathon in early November. You can't keep me away from this race. It's my favorite.

There will be some IronRose self-supported training events scattered through the summer including a 2/3 or 3/4 distance. As always, everyone is invited to be part of the fun.

  1. This is SO exciting! I love planning too. You might inspire me to write something similar. So of course I have some questions since I am so curious about this stuff. Do you always do a spring marathon? I am taking a break this spring so I will be watching you jealously. But you are right - training for a spring marathon is kind of a beast. I am enjoying long runs that top off at 10-12 miles. Since I am not a triathlete, I have a hard time imagining TWO half IMs in a summer, but cool - I am guessing that this is an appropriate way to space them, about six weeks apart? Also - you should patent the term IronRose. That is brilliant. Can't wait to watch you get after it!

    1. Hi Sarah! Usually I run a bunch of half marathons in the spring, 2018 is the only other year I've done a spring full. I've done two 70.3 races every summer since 2017, they are generally spaced 6-8 week apart and that seems to work for me, but everyone is different. My strength coach Shannon got me a hat that said IronRose right before Louisville. We have often nicknamed the 2/3 and 3/4 as Roseapalooza but either works.

  2. What a plan! Seeing it on one page makes it feel manageable. Hope it feels the same to you.

I don't remember when exactly ME first floated the idea of a 3/4 Ironman distance training race, but I do know it was on tap by the end of last year's review/2017 planning.  We picked a date between Grand Rapids 70.3 and Steelhead 70.3, which happened to be last Saturday - which is consistent with me doing an event intended to try to kill me right before my birthday (RAIN, Muncie 70.3, and Muskoka 70.3 are recent examples). I got my personal support team of Tom and Trena on board early.  I would need them to help me plan and get through the day and they were enthusiastically on board.  David was slated to ride the first lap of the ride and run point for the day...which eventually got reshuffled a tiny bit with the realization that NITE Ride in Indy was that night and he loves riding it.  Plan A was for Ft. Ben to be the venue, but in reality it is hillier than necessary out there so we moved it to Carmel (Monon Center). I had visited Lindsay to work through exten...

My First Duathlon

There are relatively few road running distances I haven't raced and the same is true with triathlon. But there's a whole multisport world I never really planned to explore. I always teased David that duathlon was for people who can't swim. And it still may be, but the why we can't swim has changed. Pools are closed and it is still a bit early for open water (never mind you shouldn't really swim open water alone). And so I did my first duathlon. It wasn't what I would call an exceptionally well planned event. It was more like semi-spontaneous shenanigans. Semi being like 10 days lead time. It started with a social pose from Ironman Virtual Reality with the upcoming schedule for their VR events. April 24-26 was listed as half Iron distance duathlon. I looked at my Training Peaks plan and my weekend was going to be "close enough" to that that I asked coach. He said sure and rearranged my weekend. I took Friday off work to plan everything for my Saturday...
