Always be learning

Last week was a good one, with some important lessons for Louisville.

Monday - 2,624 yard open water swim at Mystic Bay.

Tuesday - 7 mile run with 3 miles of increasing effort every half mile. A fourth mile would have been good, but I was fast enough the last 800 that I didn't really have anywhere to go without "racing." But I'll take 7 miles in 1:20.

Wednesday - Volunteered on the Firecracker6 course and then went for an easy ride with a friend. Later in the day I headed out to Fort Harrison to swim. 15 mile ride, 2,800 yard swim.

Thursday - with sketchy weather and my bike being prepped for the weekend I did my progression ride on the trainer, but that was fine because it meant I had more control over it too. 20 miles with 50 minutes of increasing power ever 10 minutes.

Friday - even though the pool schedule said the indoor 25 was open, it wasn't really so I converted the workout for the outdoor 50 and swam my 2,953 yards (2,700 meters).

Saturday - rode one loop (83 miles) of the Ironman Louisville course. It could have gone two ways: scared me and worried me about the goal, or improved my confidence. It was confidence building, but I also learned I need to work on long continuous grades. And some modifications to my bike will be helpful so we're working on those...mostly accessory changes.

Sunday - I slept past my alarms and ran out of time to run before church. I probably needed the sleep though. In the afternoon David and I went to Eagle Creek and he rode while I ran. I decided to do short loops with the car as an aid station, but also carried sports drink. It was toasty hot, but not humid, and I did surprisingly well. I ran my fastest 10 miles, finishing under 1:54:30.

Vision 2020

I'm a planner. And a dork. And I wrote a lot of Vision 2020 plans around 2000 so now that it is 2020 everything feels weird. Ok, that's out of my system. Let's talk about 2020. I've already done a self-assessment of last year and met with coach to plan 2020. Everything is focused on Ironman Wisconsin on September 13.The milestones have been set, but there will be some infill along the way. Milestone 1: Carmel Marathon - I did a spring marathon (also Carmel) in 2018 ahead of Louisville and it seemed like a good idea to do that again. So for the 10th Carmel Marathon I am running the full. Spring marathons feel undertrained compared to fall because the time between recovering from fall and getting ramped up to multiple 20 mile training runs is not there. I take the spring effort as a see what happens sort of race. Must finish to keep the streak alive, but I will see how everything else unfolds. Milestone 2: TourdeLou - not so much of a race as a supported event ride ...

72cent

I don't remember when exactly ME first floated the idea of a 3/4 Ironman distance training race, but I do know it was on tap by the end of last year's review/2017 planning.  We picked a date between Grand Rapids 70.3 and Steelhead 70.3, which happened to be last Saturday - which is consistent with me doing an event intended to try to kill me right before my birthday (RAIN, Muncie 70.3, and Muskoka 70.3 are recent examples). I got my personal support team of Tom and Trena on board early.  I would need them to help me plan and get through the day and they were enthusiastically on board.  David was slated to ride the first lap of the ride and run point for the day...which eventually got reshuffled a tiny bit with the realization that NITE Ride in Indy was that night and he loves riding it.  Plan A was for Ft. Ben to be the venue, but in reality it is hillier than necessary out there so we moved it to Carmel (Monon Center). I had visited Lindsay to work through exten...

My First Duathlon

There are relatively few road running distances I haven't raced and the same is true with triathlon. But there's a whole multisport world I never really planned to explore. I always teased David that duathlon was for people who can't swim. And it still may be, but the why we can't swim has changed. Pools are closed and it is still a bit early for open water (never mind you shouldn't really swim open water alone). And so I did my first duathlon. It wasn't what I would call an exceptionally well planned event. It was more like semi-spontaneous shenanigans. Semi being like 10 days lead time. It started with a social pose from Ironman Virtual Reality with the upcoming schedule for their VR events. April 24-26 was listed as half Iron distance duathlon. I looked at my Training Peaks plan and my weekend was going to be "close enough" to that that I asked coach. He said sure and rearranged my weekend. I took Friday off work to plan everything for my Saturday...
